Abstract:

Computing is an integrated part of the practice of all science, but is still only to a limited degree integrated in most educational programs. At the University of Oslo, all bachelor programs in mathematics and natural science integrate computing from day one. For example, in the physics bachelor program, computing is introduced in a coordinated manner across mathematics, physics and computer science courses. This allows us to make fundamental changes in the curriculums and teaching practices. In this talk, we address the challenges and experiences from establishing such a program, how the program is implemented in physics and bioscience, and how we work to integrate computing in programs across contexts and across educational levels. In depth examples from physics, including examples of the use of computational essays, illustrate teaching practices and associated research projects.
