[Band playing] [Applause] All right, so real quick lesson on audio. And I made some really big mistakes because I've done this lecture once before. (Muffled voice) But around a hand where you want the microphone. Even if you've got a huge boom mic coming in, people think the boom mic is hanging out in the air somewhere it's not, it's right out of frame. And I messed up with the microphone. So now I have on my iPhone twenty-six dollar lavalier, so it sounds a lot better. The camera itself, I think, because now it sounds like when I'm getting closer and closer, it's...nope this audio is coming from the iPhone itself. Let's try to fix that. I wasn't going to use the other lesson. But then I realized, you know what, I messed up and I may well show you guys that I messed up. Unfortunately, no waterfall. Honestly it really doesn't matter what kind of microphone it is although this one may sound terrible. I don't know. I've done a couple of videos with it, this is a test video. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I've checked it before and I didn't like it because it's a cheap ear piece, it's 36 bucks, it's wireless. I use it for running. But because I messed up, I have to re-record a lot of this audio lecture. So it shows that even - you always need good audio and if you mess up, you need to redo it. Still connected but if I move all the way back here, I want to make sure I still get good audio. You can't just go, oh, I'm just going to use that bad audio and you'll see here the bad audio that I use and how bad it actually is. (Muffled voice) 'Cause the microphone's on the camera just aren't good enough. And the fact that you wouldn't want to use that ever in one of your projects. So check out the bad audio, check out the good audio, and make sure you always get good audio. How are you guys doing? I am going to do a lesson now about audio. Make sure you guys get great audio because that's one thing that students often overlook is the audio. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Audio is half of your film half, not just part of it, half the film. So if you have a beautiful image and crappy audio, you get half the points. No I'm just kidding, I'm not going to be that bad. But really, you have to focus on audio. Alright, now I' ve got the wireless earpiece working and the reason that it's better, I mean, you guys heard the difference So we could click to this and click to the other one and I'll show you some of the other mics. In a little while. Hi guys, how are you doing? I had to come to Detroit for - to pick up a guitar. Now, there's also - today it's super windy. So a couple of things that I'm trying to do to eliminate the wind is I've got the lavalier backwards inside, inside my shirt. So the lavalier - so the wind has to go through my shirt to actually get to the mic. The other thing is I do have a little windy, a little wind sock on it. If I had the wind sock on the outside, yes, it helps a little bit but if I've the wind sock on the inside, it helps even more. Alright, I do kinda like this wireless ear thing, this wireless trick that the mic had for us, except for the fact that the audio sucks. Now, yes, it does kinda brush against my skin and the shirt if I start moving the shirt. So you have to be aware of that. So getting good audio, super, super important. I liked this little trick. I'm going to check it later to see if I actually like what the audio quality is. I can't imagine I'm going to like it all that much for $36 for the earpiece, although the $26, little lavalier microphone that I use to plug-in my camera that I got on Amazon was actually pretty good. Doing video work - great, there's a lot of wind. There's a lot of wind I don't know if I'm gonna be able to, to actually use this. And the wind is blowing the iPhone a little bit, I got the iPhone on a really nice tripod here, but it's still blowing the iPhone, so it's not going to look quite as good. I'm just waiting for the wind to die down a little bit. Okay, there it died down a little bit. Alright, what was I talking about again? And right now my $700 Sennheizer wireless, which is an amazing brand, is not doing so well. Right. Okay. So be careful of what's in the background and all that kind of stuff. But I think just having a microphone that's actually close to you, I think is the most important thing. For me it's about that far away, a microphone that far away from you, but the boom mic, like the boom mic would be right over my head right now, just barely and pointed towards my chest here and a lavalier mic here. This mic is right here, so it's all really close to my mouth. I'm not I don't really like this one too much because it's not- my voice is going this way not back towards my ear. Hey, how are you guys doing? This is a quick little video on the iPhone. So I've got my iPhone. It's actually just plugged in with the normal charging cable into my laptop and I'm using Camtasia. And in Camtasia, I can actually record the stream which I didn't know about, which is pretty awesome. I don't know if you can hear that, but somebody is driving down Grand River in a motorcycle. Okay. I do have a microphone that I sit on top of my camera rig. I'm not a huge fan. I know a lot of people are, I know a lot of people get this microphone. I can't remember what the brand name is right now, but the little microphone sits on top of the camera. I bought two, because I wanted to try them out, because for something like this, it's going to be really good, right? Sit on top my camera and it's gonna give me good audio. It gets better audio than the actual iPhone itself by itself so I think that's good. But I don't like it because it's not that far away, it's that far it a lot further away. So for me, getting good audio quality is about closeness to the audio source. You need to get good audio and especially for something like this, if I move all the way down here, is it still connected? It sounds like it's still connected - if I move all the way back here I want to make sure I still get good audio. Alright really quick audio lesson here. Alright, so I got a lot of wind going. The wind is coming and it's hitting me right here. Now, this is where I want to stand because the light's hitting me in the face and it's perfect. Okay. One thing since the wind's coming this way, if I put my back to the wind, it's not going to go across you see how its going across my mic? I don't know if you're hearing it or not, but the wind is going across my mic. If I just turn. Okay. The wind is now to my back and it's not going across the mic, so it's probably going to sound better this way, but my lighting sucks this way. Right. Because the sun is over here. See how nice that lighting is? So I'm in a really crappy situation right now. So what I will do - and there's another issue with the audio right now too; there's a train. The train that's right next to MSU. It's going past, it was just honking it's horn and then I turned on the record to try to record it so you could hear it in the background, of course, it's now past it. But the idea is like right now the wind picked up again and this might sound really bad. So for me right now, if I wanted to do a stand up or if I want to shoot my class besides this, I'm doing a class about MPEG audio right now. Now I do have it tucked in, so maybe I should pull it out so you guys can hear a little bit better. And I've got the windscreen on, so I'm going to take the windscreen off. Alright? Now, it looks terrible I would fix this. But this is like I could I could feel the wind hit me right now. It's probably sounding like - sounding bad right now. So what I would do- and it's actually moving my camera too. What I would do is I would wait for the wind to die down. And then do my stand-up. Well, I bet that sounds terrible so I'm going to wait. I'm going to wait to all this wind calms down, I'm gonna hit stop and I'm gonna wait. It's also moving the camera. You can see the wind moving the camera. Wind died down for a second now it pickefd back up again. Now it's just so windy out here. I did put the microphone back on the inside. And you guys can see like I'm not touching the camera and that camera just blowing because the wind - oh it's dying down, it's dying down. It's dying down. It died down just a little bit more. Three two. So- three two. Now- see. Now I'm messing up my stand up and the wind picks back up. [Band playing] [Applause]
