Hi, I'm Nathan Moore. I'm a professor in the Geography Department and you're instructor for this semester for Go 325 Geographic Information Systems. I just wanted to introduce myself so you know who's on the other end of DTL for this course. My research expertise is in land atmosphere interactions. I SEMA simulate these processes with climate models on supercomputers. Most of the problems I work on in climate and land use change are in the tropics where things are changing pretty fast. Goal as a researcher is to try and predict where food production could possibly collapse in the coming decades. GIS is a critical tool for this and a great tool for doing general data analysis and also for visualizing information. So this course is aimed at developing your ability to critically look at data and relationships spatially and also to expand your tool base through experience with geospatial analysis. We also want to cultivate looking at the big picture. It's one thing to do spatial calculations. It's another to understand what the data are telling you and how to communicate that effectively. We will build experience doing this through the labs mostly. But over the course, I want to encourage you to think about how all these pieces fit together. This is how you transform data and information into knowledge and understanding. A couple of concluding thoughts. First, if you have any questions, drop me a line. We can zoom or email or whatever you need. I'm here for you. Second, the heart of geography is asking where and why. So ask a lot of questions. A friendly Zoom never hurts, even if you have a small question. And if you find something relatable on the Internet, please share. If you're interested, probably somebody else's, too. Finally, be a good scheduler. We have unit quizzes and weekly exercises almost every week and labs, too. I'll email every week to keep us connected through updates. But don't rely only on my weekly emails. Get everything on your own calendar. It's a great habit to develop so things don't fall through the cracks. Well, that's it. Welcome aboard. Thanks for watching, and I'll be in touch soon.
