Session 1 2026 Summer Series Qualitative Data Collection

Qualitative data—like stories, observations, and open‑ended responses—can powerfully capture Extension program impact, but only when it’s collected intentionally. This interactive session will help Extension staff understand what qualitative data is, when it’s most useful, and how to collect information that is meaningful, usable, and reportable in PEARS. Participants will explore common qualitative data collection methods used in Extension, including open‑ended survey questions, interviews, observations, and informal feedback. Emphasis will be placed on choosing the right method based on the program context, audience, and reporting needs—so the data you collect truly supports evaluation and impact storytelling. By the end of this session, participants will be able to: Explain the key differences between qualitative and quantitative data Identify when qualitative data is the best choice for Extension evaluation Select an appropriate qualitative data collection method for a specific program and reporting purpose Write stronger open‑ended questions that generate useful, actionable responses
