Neutrophil granulocytes represent around 60 percent of all white blood cells and are an essential part of the innate immune system. It was previously considered impossible to improve the innate immune system, which is partially why vaccines are focused on the adaptive / acquired immune system. Recent research tells us however, that beta glucans may improve the killing abilities of the innate immune system, and help neutrophils identify and move faster to the site of a foreign invader (chemotaxis) and devour the pathogens more effectively (phagocytosis). Research published 2011 in the journal Nature features new discoveries about how beta glucans prime the innate immune system to protect the body: http://www.facebook.com/notes/immiflex-immune-health-with-wellmune-wgp-beta-glucan/new-study-shows-h...
Beta glucans also help immune cells distinguish between "self" and "non-self", which in addition to protecting us against pathogens also provide relief for allergy sufferers. In this animation you can see how beta glucans primes the innate immune cells and help them recognize cancer tumours as abnormal tissue: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10151246551711558&set=vb.114979368656413
