Hello, all!
At MSU, we have institutional access to zoom, a pretty powerful and really stable space for online meetings and teaching.
In this brief video, I'll show you how to access MSU zoom, navigate the interface, and set up and run online sessions if you want to use zoom to hold class online.
To use zoom, you'll need a stable wireless connection, a web browser, a web cam, and a microphone (most web cams have a microphone built in).

To access MSU zoom, open a web browser. I prefer Chrome, but you can use just about any web browser you like.
Enter the URL msu.zoom.us.
At the zoom main page, click Login.
Login to zoom with your MSUnet ID and password.
Logging in should bring you to your Profile page.
You can schedule and set up an individual meeting for each class session you want to hold online, or you can use your personal meeting room.
Setting up an individual meeting will allow you to create breakout rooms for students to talk and work in small groups. Using your personal meeting room will only allow for large-group conversation.
If you set up an individual meeting, you need to create a new one for each class session, each with its own login info.
If you use your personal meeting room, the meeting URL will remain the same.
If you set up individual meetings, first enable breakout rooms in zoom from your zoom profile by going to Settings, then scrolling down to "In Meeting (Advanced)" and turning on Breakout Room.
Then set up your class meetings by going back to Meetings, then to Schedule a New Meeting, and then...

Regardless of which you set up, you'll want to let students know on D2L and via email that class will be held online and how they can get there. The email might look something like this if you set up individual meetings for each class session:
SHOW AND READ EMAIL

To hold class online, log in with zoom and then select the class session.
Allow zoom to launch, select join with computer audio, and then turn on your video.
As students arrive to class, you should hear a chime sound and see them join.
You may want to remind them early in the class session to MUTE their microphones. You, however, can also mute them by clicking on "Manage Participants." Just be sure to select "Allow Participants to Unmute Themselves" if you want them to be able to do so. Otherwise they stay muted.
If you want to share a document or slides, you can do so by sharing your screen in zoom. I’d suggest you get your materials set up beforehand. Then, when you’re ready to share your screen...
If you want to have your students work in small groups together, remember, you have to have adjusted your zoom settings for breakout rooms.
I'm going to turn things over to the experts to talk a bit more about breakout rooms.

So we’ve covered setting up an online class session, informing students about how to get to the online class session, and a bit about running the online class session.
I hope this tutorial was helpful!
